Out and About

Work has taken me to a few Central Kentucky farms in the last week. (It’s a rough life, I know!)

A yearling balks.

Included among the photographs in this post are 25-year-old, Grade 1 winner, multiple Grade 1 producer Lady Shirl; Sunday Silence’s beautiful daughter Silence Beauty (dam of Grade 1 winner Tale of Ekati); and the mare who had a cameo role in “Secretariat” as Somethingroyal giving birth to the star of the film. Coincidentally, the actress is a granddaughter of Secretariat!

Grave of Topper -- possibly a riding or companion horse -- sandwiched between the burial sites of 1926 Kentucky Derby winner Bubbling Over (d. 1948) and Blossom Time (d. 1946), dam of 1929 Belmont Stakes winner Blue Larkspur.

Fasig-Tipton in February

The weather during the Fasig-Tipton February sale is often snowy, icy, and miserable. We were lucky to enjoy a day of sunshine and blue skies this year.

Here are a few pictures from last Monday’s sale:

A three-year-old Perfect Soul colt gets tidied up before a show.

He doesn't seem to think much of the beauty routine.

Showing to a prospective buyer.

Nice teeth!

A winning four-year-old colt by Encosta de Lago.

A spirited filly coming back to the barns after going through the sale ring.

Everybody oohs and aahs over the foals. This is a 10-day-old Old Fashioned colt.

Four-day-old Tale of Ekati filly.

Going through the sale ring with a newborn foal is never easy, but this Tale of Ekati filly handled herself with aplomb.
